Liam Hemsworth, a new face of Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix The Witcher series, said he decided to take a break from social media to better manage the pressure derived from his entry into such a loved role and previously played by Henry Cavill.
In an interview granted to Entertainment Weekly, the actor explained that the chatter and conflicting reactions of the fans, exploded when the replacement of the protagonist was announced, risked becoming an obstacle to his work.
“There was a lot of noise, and I had to put it aside,” said Hemsworth. “It was beginning to become a distraction. I faced similar situations in the past and, at the end of the accounts, what I really love is to act, tell stories and make cinema ».
To be able to focus exclusively on his interpretation, Hemsworth has chosen the most direct path: to move away from social networks and the net for most of the last year.
“I didn’t want all this to influence the way I am trying to tell this story,” he added, underlining how his main objective is to return authenticity and intensity to a complex and stratified character like Geralt.
The decision is not surprising, considering how strong the attachment of the fans to Henry Cavill was, who had contributed significantly to the popularity of the series with his interpretation of the famous Witcher. The inheritance left by the British actor is cumbersome and inevitably the passage of witness generated discussions on online.
However, Hemsworth seems determined to write his page in the saga, keeping the distance from the controversy to focus on the performance. The next season of The Witcher will therefore be the decisive test to understand if the public will accept this change and if the new Geralt will be able to conquer a fandom as demanding as it is passionate.
