Counterplay Games, the studio responsible for Godfall, a launch exclusive for PS5, seems to have “dissolved”.\r\nThe information comes from an employee of Jackalyptic Games (via PlayStation Lifestyle), who in a post on LinkedIn revealed how the his team was collaborating with Counterplay Games on a project, before the latter was dismantled.\r\nThe post does not clarify whether Counterplay Games has been completely shut down or whether it has simply undergone a drastic reduction in staff.\r\nThe note refers to the LinkedIn profiles of several former developers of the studio, suggesting that this “dismantling” took place towards the end of 2024.\r\nFor those who know, I remember that Godfall (here is our review to refresh your memory) was the first title confirmed as a launch exclusive for PS5, published by Gearbox and simultaneously released on PC.\r\nIt was later ported to PS4 and, finally, Xbox. Despite the initial hype and the opportunity to usher in a new generation of consoles, the game failed to conquer the public (if you’re so curious, you can find it for two cents on Amazon).\r\nCounterplay Games, which previously had launched the free-to-play card game Duelyst on PC in 2016, so it never found the commercial success it hoped for with Godfall.\r\nThe video game industry is full of studios that, like real meteors, cross the firmament leaving a short, bright trail before going out. \r\nThe end of Counterplay Games – if its closure is confirmed – is yet another demonstration of how talent alone is not enough: a clear vision, a solid strategy and obsessive attention to detail are needed.\r\nIf Godfall was a misstep, the real shame is that there wasn’t a second chance for the studio, which apparently there may never be.\r\nBut fate, in this industry, is relentless, as is a depressing (at least, from dozens of points of view) 2024 has amply demonstrated.
