The world of The Sims is ready to make the big leap on the big screen. The film inspired by the famous EA simulation series is officially in progress, and to guarantee the quality of the project there is a team of weight names: on the front line we find Luckychap, the production house of Margot Robbie, and the Hollywood producer Roy Lee, already behind successes such as The Lego Movie and Barbie.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Lee explained that the film on The Sims will be something truly unique, to the point that it will probably not fully make sense until we see it in action.
«When we announced The Lego Movie, people could not imagine how it could work, but once in the room everything made sense. I think it will happen the same for The Sims, “said the producer.
Lee also added that the project will be “halfway between The LEGO Movie and Barbie”, two works that have taken iconic franchises and have transformed them into disruptive cinematographic experiences. A small expectation for a brand like The Sims, who for over twenty years tells the virtual everyday life of millions of players all over the world.
For the moment there are no details on the cast, nor on who will give life to the famous Sims. The project is in progress for Amazon MGM Studios and will see the director Kate Herron (known for Loki), who will also sign the screenplay together with Briony Redman (Doctor Who).
It is only the last piece of Amazon’s strategy, which is investing more and more in videogame transpositions: in production there are also series on Mass Effect, Wolfenstein, Tomb Raider, God of War and Life is Strange, while the Fallout series will return with the second season in December.
In the meantime, The Sims 4 continues to receive constant updates and new expansions, while The Sims 5 has not yet been announced. This film could therefore become the next great opportunity to report the franchise in the spotlight and conquer a new audience outside the community of historical players.
For me, the idea of a film on The Sims seemed impossible until a few years ago, but if there is someone who can transform a life simulator into a captivating cinematographic experience, that someone is Roy Lee. Dopotutto, se un film sui mattoncini LEGO e uno su Barbie sono riusciti a diventare fenomeni culturali, perché non potrebbe riuscirci anche The Sims?
