Nostalgic shooter fans can finally get their hands on next-gen console-optimized versions of a ’90s classic. Nightdive Studios, a software house specialized in recovering and updating historical titles, has made the remastered version of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, at the price of $19.99. This is an operation that brings to the latest generation hardware a restoration work already started in 2017, when the game was re-released on previous platforms.
The development house has chosen to accompany this launch with a particularly interesting initiative for collectors: a physical collection called Turok Trilogy Bundle, which brings together the first three chapters of the saga dedicated to the dinosaur hunter. This collection, available for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, represents a unique opportunity for those who want to rediscover the entire trilogy in a single solution. The remastered version of the second chapter was already present on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC through various digital platforms such as Steam, GOG and Humble Store.
The plot picks up exactly where the first chapter ended: after defeating the Campaigner, the protagonist throws the powerful Chronocepter into a volcano to destroy it permanently. However, this seemingly wise choice turns out to be a fatal mistake, as the explosion awakens an even more devastating threat: the Primagen. The new Turok’s task will be to prevent this entity from merging the Earth with the underworld, restoring balance in an increasingly unstable universe.
From a gameplay point of view, the title maintains intact the frenetic spirit that made it famous in the late ’90s. Players will have to face 35 different types of opponents, each characterized by peculiar animations: bouncing bellies, flashing eyes, elastic tentacles and snapping jaws. The bestiary ranges from prehistoric Raptors to the most advanced Flesh Eaters, culminating in the final battle against the Mother of All Beasts.
One of the most appreciated aspects of the original title, and faithfully maintained in the remastered version, concerns the artificial intelligence of the enemies. Opponents are not simply passive targets: they know how to coordinate to attack in groups, retreat when outnumbered and seek cover during firefights. Furthermore, the hit detection system allows differentiated physical reactions depending on the part of the body hit, adding a level of tactical realism to clashes.
The adventure develops across six completely remastered main levels, which include evocative locations such as the Port of Adia, the Marshes of Death and the Den of the Blind. Each environment presents specific challenges and distinctive atmospheres, maintaining the variety that characterized the original experience. There are over 20 different weapons available to the player, some of which have become true icons of the franchise.
Among the available arsenal, the Shredder stands out, a rifle capable of firing multiple ricocheting projectiles that can hit multiple targets at the same time. But the weapon that has won a special place in the hearts of fans is undoubtedly the Cerebral Bore, a lethal device that pierces enemy skulls, literally making their brains fly away. For those who prefer a more direct and spectacular approach, it is possible to ride a Triceratops equipped with mounted artillery, crushing enemies under the weight of the armored beast.
