Sonic hit the big screen, SEGA wants to replicate with two historical IPs

The success of Sonic films at the cinema was hardly predictable, so much so that SEGA seems to be seriously considering capitalizing on its IPs.

The second film of the blue hedgehog in particular, which you find on Amazon on Blu-Ray in a bundle with the previous one, proved to be an unprecedented success at the box office.

Having grossed a lot as a movie in itself, Sonic 2 has quickly become the biggest video game movie ever, a truly unthinkable record.

So much so that the same authors were taken into consideration for the film adaptation of It Takes Two , announced some time ago.

Returning to SEGA, the Japanese company will continue to invest in the cinema world bringing other legendary IPs of its portfolio.

Older players will have recognized the next ones, which stand out on the cover: Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone .

Two SEGA’s iconic 90s games will be the next IPs to hit the big screen according to Hollywood Reporter , who first broke the news.

The production company that will take care of the projects is Picturestart, authors of Am I Ok? and Cha Cha Real Smooth , a recent title that made sparks at the last Sundance, and which will curate the next Borderlands , staying on the video game theme.

The Space Channel 5 film will be curated by Barry Battles and Nir Paniry , the first author of The Baytown Outlaws and the second of Extracted , and is described like this:

« Channel 5 , a comedy / dance adaptation of the cult game from 1999, will tell the story of an unfortunate fast food worker who is recruited by a freedom journalist of the future to save the world from aliens, using the one thing that unites all the people on the planet: our love for viral stupid dancing. “

As for the adaptation of Comix Zone , however, it will be edited by Mae Catt . His resume includes Young Justice (Emmy Award-winning series about young heroes from DC Comics), How to Train Your Dragon, Dragons: The Nine Realm among others.

This is how the film is described:

«Zone, an adaptation of the cult console game, follows the story of a weary comic book creator and a young queer black writer who, once sucked into the latest issue of his popular series, they will have to put their differences aside to stop a dangerous supervillain from wreaking havoc. In the meantime, they will witty explore the ever-evolving art of storytelling itself. “

We’re definitely curious to see some trailers at this point, as Sonic prepares to make a further return to non-gaming screens with Sonic Prime , a new Netflix series that looks promising .

The films and TV series based on video games are so many that it is difficult to keep up with them. Here is the complete and constantly updated list.
