The game console market could be close to a turning point, with Sony ready to respond to Nintendo Switch’s success with an unpublished strategy.
According to rumors from sources close to industry, the Japanese company would not limit itself to developing a traditional successor of the PlayStation 5, but would have a hybrid project capable of redefining the concept of domestic console. A move that would aim to replicate the versatility already rewarded by the Nintendo formula.
The information comes from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law Is Dead, known for the leaks related to the PlayStation world. According to the advances, Sony would be working on two distinct versions of the PlayStation 6.
The first would follow the tradition of domestic consoles, with high -performance hardware still based on AMD chip. The second, however, would represent the real novelty: a hybrid portable PS6, designed to work both as a handheld device and as a living room console, thanks to a dock that would allow the connection to TV and external monitor.
The alleged internal documents speak of a machine with four Zen 6c cores dedicated to gaming, flanked by two cores for system functions. In Dock mode, this architecture would guarantee performance equivalent to a standard PS5.
On the graphic front, the GPU would reach 1.2 GHz in laptop and up to 1.65 GHz in docks, numbers that – if confirmed – would offer a console experience also on the move, exceeding the limits of current gaming handheld.
The launch would be set for the end of 2027, with the hybrid version proposed to around 500 dollars (the European price should not be far from much), a premium but competitive price compared to the market. A choice that could prove to be decisive to combat not only Nintendo, but also the new competitors such as Microsoft, ready to introduce its Rog Xbox Ally on October 16th.
This double strategy would mark a clear change in Sony’s vision. While Microsoft gets closer to the PC model, the Japanese company would focus on versatility, trying to combine domestic and mobile gaming in one ecosystem.
The main challenge will be to keep the PlayStation identity intact, guaranteeing an offer of games and services that knows how to better enhance the new format. If this bet proves to be a winner, 2027 could represent the beginning of a new era for gambling consoles.
