In an interview granted to EDGE , PlayStation boss Jim Ryan pointed out that the price of PS5 was not decided based on that by Xbox Series X.
Sony has been waiting for each of its major next-gen announcements for the competition to move, or so it seemed publicly, but Ryan instead pushes forward the idea that it would be just a coincidence.
«We have set our product lineup at the end of last year » , said the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
«Our preferred pricing was determined earlier this year, before the lockdown . And we just went ahead and ran with what we wanted to do. ”
There have been no changes in the running, in short, to adapt to Microsoft’s bold move to launch its flagship for € 499 and a variant, Xbox Series S , even from € 399.
To an explicit question as to whether or not the price had changed after the Xbox announcement, Ryan pointed out that this didn’t happen with a “no no, it hasn’t changed, no” .
«We managed to launch PlayStation 5 for € 399, $ 399, with all the power and feature set that the console has, at the same price as we launched PS4 in 2013.
This was important to us, and we are very happy that we were able to do it. 399 worked very well for us last time and we would like it to work very well for us again. “
Obviously, the € 399 price tag refers only to the Digital model, which has no technical differences whatsoever except for the absence of the Blu-ray player.
In contrast, the Xbox Series S, which costs € 299, is significantly less powerful than the Xbox Series X.
