A new report raises the alarm for a semiconductor crisis that does not seem to hint at returning, aggravating the condition of stocks for PS5, Xbox Series X | S and others electronics products.
At the moment, the only next-gen console available without worries of mind is the Xbox Series S, while the other supplies continue to be with a dropper.
For now, Sony has provided reassurance regarding the units it plans to sell this year, but the unfolding situation could spoil their plans once again.
The same Japanese company has opened up the possibility of new designs to circumvent the shortage of components, even if for now there are no clues as to the realization of such a track.
Now, however, a new procurement urgency may arise, as reported by Bloomberg .
In particular, the situation in Malaysia is of particular concern, where the number of COVID-19 infections is increasing.
Although behind Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, Malaysia is a very important hub in the semiconductor production chain.
In detail, this is where the testing of the chips and their packaging take place before delivery to the customer, as in the case of Sony or Microsoft .
Currently there are 20,000 cases per week, up from 5,000 at the end of June, a sign that the emergency is all but over.
The so-called chip lead times , i.e. the time elapsed from the order of a semiconductor and its delivery, have increased up to 20.2 weeks – the highest figure since when tracking started in 2017.
This means that, in the event that factories are forced to close for up to two weeks (which happens with three positive workers, according to local law), the entire production chain of consoles and technology products may experience further delays.
For now, with plants already at 60% of the workforce , we are in the hypothesis branch but a new lockdown and therefore an additional slowdown in production cannot be ruled out.
Similarly, initiatives such as the new PS5 model cannot be ruled out to anticipate similar problems.
At this stage, however, we have no signs of significant adjustments to the components, as only the screw of the stand has been highlighted as an evident change.
It should be noted that the emergency does not only concern the PlayStation 5 but also the Xbox Series X, the shortage of which is similarly destined to continue in the future.
