Among the many novelties of the Nintendo Direct, there was an announcement that nobody would have expected: Virtual Boy is about to return, this time as part of the Nintendo Switch online service + Expansion Pack. Thirty years after its original release, the 3D device of 1995 receives a second life with a new official peripheral compatible peripheral both with switch and with switch 2.
The return of Virtual Boy is not limited to a simple software emulator. In fact, Nintendo has presented two physical versions of the viewer: a plastic replica faithful to the original, complete with a stand support, and a cheaper variant made of cardboard, which recalls the spirit of the labo experiences.
Both solutions will allow you to relive games with the characteristic red and black 3D effect which, in 1995, had intrigued but also made players from all over the world discuss.
14 games included, gradually released in the catalog, with titles such as Mario’s Tennis, Red Alarm, Teleroboxer, Galactic Pinball and even two versions of Tetris. Among the most curious there is also Mario Clash, one of the rarest and most forgotten games of the original line-up.
The launch does not yet have a precise date, but Nintendo has confirmed that the availability of the games will coincide with that of the peripherals, which can be purchased separately. It is a choice that reiterates the will of the Kyoto company to give new life to its most particular experiments, not only to great successes.
The virtual boy, at the time of his debut, had not obtained the hoped for a high price: thanks to a high price and a limited titles park, he had earned the fame of one of the most famous flops in the history of Nintendo. But over time it has become an object of worship, wanted by collectors and re-evaluated by fans as a pioneering example of ante-literam virtual reality.
Now, after three decades, Nintendo decides to bring it back to the center of the scene with an operation that combines nostalgia, curiosity and the desire to offer the public an unusual experience. An announcement that confirms how the online switch’s library is becoming increasingly varied, ranging from Nes and SNES to the most improbable surprises in the company’s history.
The return of Virtual Boy will therefore not only be a tribute to the past, but also the opportunity to discover or rediscover a fascinating piece of the story of Nintendo, today ready to surprise a new generation of players.
