Nintendo is accelerating its expansion into the cinematic world with an aggressive strategy that aims to turn its video game IPs into cinematic blockbusters on a regular basis. After the global success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, which dominated the global box office, the Kyoto company recently confirmed during a presentation to investors that it is building a framework to guarantee constant film releases in the coming years. The message is clear: Nintendo wants to replicate the Marvel model in animation and live-action, taking advantage of a portfolio of franchises that few other videogame publishers can boast.
The calendar is already defined for the next few years: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will arrive in theaters on April 3 next year, followed by the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda in 2027. But it’s what comes next that drives the community crazy: during the presentation, Nintendo showed a slide with the posters of the three films already announced accompanied by empty spaces that suggest at least two other film projects already in development. \
