Lies of P and Stellar Blade are just the beginning: Korea is focusing heavily on video games

That Korea was getting serious about video games had been clear for quite some time. The news, however, is that now the objective that the country has set itself is to have a greater weight in the console and PC games market, while right now the mobile sector is above all the dominant one.\r \nSo, after Stellar Blade and Lies of P, recent successes of Korean production, it seems reasonable to expect other important projects in the next five years.\r\nThis was made known by the Deputy Minister for Culture Jeon Byeong-geuk who , as reported by the Korea Times, has put its hands forward anticipating substantial support for the future of the video game industry in South Korea.\r\n”During the five-year plan that aims to promote the games industry” we read in the Korean newspaper , «the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism will work to expand the share of the global console market by 2028, so as to reduce the strong dependence on online and mobile gaming platforms».\r\nThe objective, therefore, is that of strengthening the Korean industry also in terms of AAA and more traditional video games, intended for the world of consoles – as happened with Stellar Blade and with Lies of P (which you can find at a discount on Instant Gaming).\r\nNow how now, although South Korea is the fourth largest market in the world for video game sales (we are talking about $16.04 billion in 2022), the vast majority of these revenues come from the panorama of mobile and online games.\r \n\n Read also\n Creating video games in Italy: growth, opportunities and the future | Face to face with IIDEA\n\n\r\nThe share of the console market in Korea is only 1.5% globally – while consoles are 28% of the industry as a whole. It seems clear, therefore, why the country is aiming to expand into this market too, considering that over 40% of video gamers in North America and Europe play on a console.\r\nThe premises seen with Stellar Blade and with Lies of P, who have put forward interesting ideas and a good mix, while making their illustrious sources of inspiration clear, can be considered an excellent starting point. Let’s see, for the future, where the road of video games will lead for Korea.\r\nAnd it is certainly interesting to read about a market that intends to invest and focus on the development of video games, from a country like ours in which the industry – for resistance and mentality in general, despite the great progress of recent years, both in the consumer and worker markets – it is not yet proceeding to the full potential at which it could do so.
