Card games are undoubtedly the new battleground for video game franchises, because now Riot Games is also joining the fray with Project K, a physical collectible card game in the world of League of Legends.\r\nJust a few hours ago CD Project Red had revealed the arrival of the physical version of Gwent, the card game of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Riot Games almost seems to have responded to that reveal.\r\nThe announcement came as a surprise today, in which Riot Games published a video showing some of the physical cards of Project K and telling the first details of the project.\r\nThe project is developed by a small internal team led by Dave Guskin (game director) and Chengran Chai (producer executive). Riot Games will not publish the game directly, but has found a publishing partner in China for an initial launch expected in early 2025. After that, a global distribution is planned, for which Riot is looking for collaborators in the United States and other international markets .\r\n\r\nConceived as a direct competitor of Magic the Gathering, which knows a thing or two about video game worlds between Fallout, Assassin’s Creed and the next set dedicated to Final Fantasy, Project K wants to encourage the social experience between friends and players.\r\nDespite sharing some elements with the digital card game Legends of Runeterra, Riot has made it clear that Project K is not a simple physical version of the latter. The game takes some of the design philosophies related to champions and benefits from illustrations from other titles in the League universe. The goal is to create an active community, supported by a competitive ecosystem that includes national and global tournaments.\r\nAfter the overwhelming success of Arcane, Riot Games intends to push even harder to make League of Legends a multi-platform brand and medium. Not to mention 2XKO, the ambitious fighting game whose development is proceeding rapidly.
