How different is Metal Gear Solid Delta from Metal Gear Solid 5?

When Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater (here you find our review) was announced, many fans hoped that Konami could take inspiration from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, still considered today the highest point of the series in terms of Gameplay Stealth.
The expectations pointed to a remake that combined Snake Eater’s narrative depth with the fluid and modern mechanics of the fifth chapter. The reality, however, tells a very different approach.
Delta in fact presents itself as a faithful reconstruction of the original experience, with a deliberately slower rhythm and settings that remain compact and dense, faithful to the nature of the title released on PlayStation 2.
There is no possibility of running as in Metal Gear Solid V, and the action remains linked to a classic setting (as can be seen from here) which favors the tension and careful management of the movements. The return of the roe deer, also useful in some clashes with the bosses, is a detail that confirms this choice of loyalty.
Even the shooting system (as you will notice by clicking here) confirms the direction of the remake. Despite having introduced some more modern options, such as the rapid change of the orientation of the camera, weapons in Delta work in a much closer way to the original than to Metal Gear Solid V.
The customizations and enhancements introduced by Fox Engine are missing: what is found during the adventure is what will accompany the player to the end. Even the tranquilizing gun, a historical weapon of the saga, has been modified to be less powerful (look with your eyes from here), with a more realistic bullet trajectory that forces to get closer to the enemies.
On the Close Quarters Combat (CQC) front, Delta remains very faithful to the 2004 version. The sockets, projections and animations are similar to the original, albeit with some adjustments to make the movements more fluid. There are no advanced moves of Metal Gear Solid V, where the hand -to -hand system had been brought to an almost cinematic level. In delta, close combat remains essential, but more contained and in line with traditional stealth philosophy.
Ultimately, Metal Gear Solid Delta does not want to be a “mod” of The Phantom Pain, but a real return to Snake Eater with some modern retouching. It is a remake that aims to evoke the same atmosphere and the same sense of tension as the original, maintaining that fragile balance between infiltration and survival that made one of the most loved chapters of the series unique.
