Google turns Halloween into a Pac-Man game!

The famous hungriest yellow dot in the history of video games returns to keep us company during Halloween, with an initiative that celebrates 45 years since its birth. Google has decided to pay homage to Pac-Man with an interactive Doodle that transforms the search engine’s homepage into a virtual arcade, offering users the opportunity to relive the arcade experience that marked an entire generation of gamers.
The initiative, available today and tomorrow, features four haunted house-themed mazes specially designed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the parent company of the franchise. The choice of the period is not random: the overlap between the anniversary of the game and the Halloween holiday creates a perfect combination, considering that ghosts have always been the undisputed protagonists of Pac-Man’s adventures.
The gameplay remains faithful to the original formula that conquered the world in 1980. Players must guide the protagonist through the mazes, devouring all the dots scattered along the paths while trying to escape the chasing ghosts. The challenge lies in completing each level without ending up in the clutches of the fearsome Ghost Gang.

The game’s historic antagonists are once again present with their distinctive personalities that influence the very design of the mazes. Blinky, the red ghost, maintains his aggressive behavior by going after Pac-Man directly, while the other members of the gang prefer more subtle encirclement tactics. This variety of approaches requires players to continually adapt their strategy.
The Power Pallets mechanism introduces the reversal element that made the game famous: by collecting them, a limited-time event is activated during which the roles are reversed. Pac-Man becomes the hunter and can devour the ghosts, which take on the characteristic blue color signaling their temporary vulnerability.
To access the gaming experience, simply visit the Google homepage from your computer or open the search engine’s mobile application, available for both Android and iOS devices. The controls vary depending on the platform: on PC you use the arrow keys on the keyboard, while on smartphones and tablets you need to swipe or press and move your finger on the screen to change direction.
The operation represents yet another demonstration of how Google uses its Doodles not only to commemorate historical events or illustrious personalities, but also to celebrate pop culture phenomena that have left an indelible mark on the collective imagination. Pac-Man, with its 45 years of history, undoubtedly belongs to this category of intergenerational icons that continue to attract audiences of all ages.
