Uncork’d Entertainment is preparing to release a documentary that promises to shed light on a project as ambitious as it is unfortunate: the film adaptation of Resident Evil by George A. Romero.\r\nThe legendary director, nicknamed “The father of zombie”, is famous for having redefined the horror genre with iconic films such as Night of the Living Dead (1968), Zombies (1978) and Day of the Zombies (1985).\r\nNow, his failed version of Resident Evil (series you can find on Amazon) will return to the center of attention thanks to a documentary that tells its backstory, aspirations and obstacles (via Game Rant).\r\nDirected and co-written by Brandon Salisbury, the documentary will analyze the events that led Constantin Film to choose Romero to adapt the popular video game series in 1998, only to abandon the project in favor of Paul W.S. Anderson, the director behind the 2002 film with Milla Jovovich.\r\n\r\nRomero’s film, although based on the Resident Evil universe, was criticized by Yoshiki Okamoto, Capcom producer, for straying too far from the video game original from 1996.\r\nArchived too soon, Romero’s screenplay never saw the light, however leaving an indelible mark on the collective imagination.\r\nThe Man Who had inspired the entire zombie subgenre found himself observing as a spectator the success of the film he himself had hoped to direct.\r\nThe documentary will include archive footage and interviews with those who worked on the project, trying to offer a complete vision of Romero’s cultural legacy and his connection to Resident Evil.\r\nAlready in 1997, Capcom had brought the director on board to direct a live-action trailer for the second chapter of the series, recognizing his influence on the franchise.\r\nKeith Leopard, president of Uncork’d Entertainment, described the project as a tribute to Romero’s incredible vision and the power of storytelling that could have been.\r\nThe documentary will be available digitally and on-demand in the United States on 7 January 2025. A date for the international release has not yet been announced, but fans of Romero and Resident Evil would do well to mark their calendars.\r\nIn the meantime, I remind you that you can catch up on the entire Resident Evil saga in discount, a starting from 1.49 euros, but not for long.
