GameStop seeks redemption: collaboration with Microsoft announced

Last September, GameStop – one of the most important chains among those related to the video game market and beyond – had recorded a worrying -26.7 % in revenues in Q2 2020 compared to the same period of the previous year.

More specifically, the giant had only registered 942 million dollars in net revenue, in a period also marked by a health emergency that is a noose around the neck and whose impact on the video game market has in any case affected quite harshly (especially for the issue related to the retail branch).

Now, however, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel: GameStop has indeed announced a multi-year partnership with Microsoft to expand their ecosystem linked to both the physical and digital, also improving the comp agnia.

The idea, according to what leaked from the official channels of the company, is to create the “ultimate gaming destination” for all users.

With over 5,000 retail stores worldwide and its world-class ecommerce platform, GameStop leverages its vast customer network, PowerUp rewards, and more to provide advanced gaming solutions to its customers.

In other words, the company will standardize the company’s business operations based on Microsoft’s cloud solutions and hardware products to offer customers new digital experiences, with the final vision of becoming the main entry point for gaming-themed products.

George Sherman , CEO of GameStop, said:

This is an exciting day at GameStop as we announce the advancement of a major partnership that leverages the power of our operating platform and significant video game market share to accelerate our digital transformation. […] We are excited about the opportunity to leverage our capabilities to support the launch of the next generation of gaming consoles and expand our reach and connection to the community of gamers around the world through this partnership.

Unfortunately, this does not mean that many stores will be closed by the end of the year (estimates speak of a fixed number between 400 and 500).
