Final Fantasy 14 and 16 on Switch 2? Something boils in the pot

The world of MMORPG could soon open up to a new generation of players thanks to the arrival of Final Fantasy 14 on Nintendo Switch 2. Naoki Yoshida, known as Yoshi-P and a prominent face of Square Enix, has leaving that the negotiations with Nintendo are proceeding positively, fueling the hopes of millions of fans.
His statements, made after the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, also suggested that Final Fantasy 16 (here our review) could arrive on the Japanese hybrid console.
Bring Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2 would not only mean expanding the market, but introducing a real revolution in the gaming experience. Yoshida imagines fascinating scenarios for veterans: relax on the sofa with the collection and crafting activities on the portable console, and then move on to the PC when it comes to dealing with the most complex raids. A flexibility that could redefine the way the Warriors of Light live their virtual world.
For the new players, the arrival on Switch 2 would instead represent a unique opportunity to approach the MMO genre. The accessible and immediate nature of the Nintendo console would break down many of the entry barriers that traditionally discourage the least experienced players, bringing them closer to an experience usually linked to PC Gaming.
The discussions between Square Enix and Nintendo seem to go in the right direction. Yoshida reiterated how both companies are “doing their best” to concretize the project, while inviting fans to still have a little patience: in fact, technical and commercial details to be defined remain.
The enthusiasm of the producer is palpable: it is not only a technical challenge, but a step towards a wider vision, which aims to democratize access to experiences so far the prerogative of a niche of fans with advanced setups.
His words came in conjunction with the crossover of the crossover between Final Fantasy 14 and Monster Hunter Wilds, a sign that Square Enix intends to focus more and more on strategic collaborations to expand his audience. The arrival on Switch 2 would mark a historical precedent for the MMO genre on Nintendo console, opening the way for new titles of equal complexity.
Waiting for official confirmations, Yoshida’s optimism bodes well: the announcement could arrive in the coming months, with the aim of redefining both the landscape of portable gaming and that of modern mmorpgs.
