EA’s new platformer is signed by the voice actor of Bayek in Assassin’s Creed

For several years now, the EA Originals label of Electronic Arts has been publishing very interesting small video games: just think of Unravel or the more recent It Takes Two (which even won the GOTY in 2021), to get an idea by bothering just a couple of names.\r\nThe next one to come under EA’s protective wing is Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, presented during The Game Awards and born from the mind of Abubakar Salim. If his name doesn’t sound completely new to you, it’s because he’s the actor who gave voice to Bayek in Assassin’s Creed Origins.\r\nAnd the idea of creating a video game was born from a more human reason than ever : trying to process the mourning of the loss of his father, who passed away prematurely.\r\nSince they both enjoyed sharing their love for video games, the idea of creating a game that could touch on this theme and help those stuck in the same long and painful process it was almost natural.\r\n\r\n«My father died of cancer in 2013. I know that many of you can understand, or at least imagine the pain of such a loss. Saying that ‘it wasn’t the way it was supposed to go’ is the best way to describe how I felt” explained the author on the game’s official website.\r\n”Since then I have always looked for a way to process that mourning: ignore it , talk about it, work on it. It’s strange to think how we almost came full circle with the desire to make a game that honored both our bond and our passion for video games.”\r\nSo, here is Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, which puts us in the shoes of a protagonist determined to save his father from death. «And here it is: a video game born from the need to tell the story of the affection that united two people. Created by a son for his father”.\r\nOur hero, ZAU, will receive a Bantu tale as a gift from his missing father: we will thus explore the lands of Kenzera, after having made a pact with the god of death in an attempt to regain our father.\r\n\r\n«When I started thinking about this game, everything started from this question: ‘What would I do to bring my father back and spend another moment with him?’. At first I didn’t have an answer. And to be honest I don’t think I’ve found it yet. But I feel like I’m getting closer” said the author.\r\nThe game is structured as a 2.5D action-adventure platform, which will lead us to discover scenarios in which the shamanic powers of ZAU will be able to give us a big hand . The challenges we face will actually invoke the need for spiritual healing – for us and anyone who has suffered loss.\r\nProviding us with more details, Surgent Studios and EA explained:\r\n\r\n«Taking place in the beautiful, but treacherous, lands of Kenzera, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is inspired by Bantu tales, rich in a history of chaos and order, memories of ancient shamans, sacred spirits and fascinating creatures.\r\nPlayers can wield and expand powers cosmic masks of the Sun and Moon to defeat restless spirits in rhythmic combat; they can manipulate time and crystallize enemies using the powers of the Moon Mask, or throw flaming spears with the Sun Mask – all in meticulously hand-crafted animations.\r\nTo the tune of award-winning composer Nainita’s enchanting original soundtrack Desai, Zau’s quest to become a worthy spiritual healer takes place in several unique and vibrant environments.”\r\n\r\nThe release of Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is already set for April 23, 2024, when it will debut on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, EA), Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The list price is 19.99 euros.
