Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 looks like a great JRPG, and there’s a release date

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been a bit quiet in recent months, and thanks to Xbox’s Developer Direct 2025 it once again shows itself as the JRPG that fans of the genre have been waiting for.\r\nDeveloped by the French team Sandfall Interactive , Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 aims to combine classic elements of the genre with fresh and innovative ideas. The combat system, for example, combines strategic turns with real-time elements, such as the ability to dodge or parry attacks.\r\nGuillaume Broche, CEO and creative director, explained how each character in the game has its own unique style , with distinctive mechanics and fully customizable skill trees.\r\nLune, one of the protagonists, can accumulate “Spots” during combat to enhance her abilities, while other characters, such as Gustave and his overloaded arm or Sciel with its Foretell charges inspired by the Sun and Moon, they offer further possibilities for strategic experimentation.\r\n\r\nDespite the complexity of the combat system, Sandfall Interactive has also thought of less experienced players, introducing adjustable difficulty options. The time windows for parries and dodges can be expanded for those looking for a more accessible experience, while those who prefer a greater challenge will find their money’s worth in the more difficult modes, where precision in reflexes becomes fundamental.\r\nVisually, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stands out for a style inspired by the Art Deco of the French Belle Époque, reinterpreted in an alien key. Nicolas Maxson-Francombe, artistic director, explained how the choice to avoid already seen clichés – such as zombies or generic space settings – led to a fresh aesthetic, influenced by ceramic shapes and bold colours. The goal was to create a world that was as unique as it was evocative, capable of captivating the player from the first glance.\r\nAnother element that celebrates the great classics of the genre is the return of the navigable world map, a tribute to JRPGs of the past which in many modern games seems to have been forgotten.\r\nBroche underlined how this choice was central from the beginning of the project, since the map conveys the sense of journey and discovery which is the beating heart of the game. In addition to exploring detailed levels, players will find secret bosses, hidden puzzles and even the chance to fight against merchants to unlock exclusive items.\r\nEverything has been designed to enrich the experience and keep the player’s curiosity alive, also thanks to a very respectable cast that was revealed some time ago.\r\nClair Obscur: Expedition 33 will debut on April 24th and will be available from launch on Game Pass (you can subscribe on Amazon), as well as on PC and PlayStation 5.
