The Bioshock film project (whose videogame counterparty is having more than some trunk) continues to take shape, after almost two decades of failed attempts. In a recent interview, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment confirmed that the film will be based on the first chapter of the series and that the script is currently being scripted.
To deal with the script is Michael Green, already the author of Logan and Blade Runner 2049, while the direction is entrusted to Francis Lawrence, known for having directed more films of the Hunger Games saga. Lawrence, however, is currently engaged with Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, coming out in November 2026, which is why Bioshock’s production will begin only once that project will be completed.
According to Lee, the revision works on the script caused a slowdown in the roadmap: “Bioshock was delayed a bit because further work was needed on the script. During this time we shot The Long Walk. ”He explained.
The path to the big screen was not easy. Already in 2008 Take-Boo had signed an agreement with Universal Pictures to make a Bioshock film directed by Gore Verinski, director of Pirates of the Caribbean. That project, however, was shipwrecked in 2013 due to too high budgets and the abandonment of multiple directors.

In 2022 Netflix announced a new live-action adaptation, in collaboration with Vertigo Entertainment and 2k. Two years later, however, the streaming giant has significantly resized the budget, with the intention of making a “more personal” and less ambitious film in terms of productive scale. During the Comic-Con 2024, Lee had explained that the project had been “reconfigured” precisely to adapt to this new vision.
Despite the cuts, the goal remains to recreate the unique atmosphere of the first Bioshock, set in the underwater city of Rapture, with its mix of philosophy, social criticism and dystopian horror. For fans, the confirmation that the story will take inspiration directly from the first chapter represents a positive sign, given that it is considered one of the most influential video games of the last twenty years.
After years of announcements and cancellations, Bioshock’s film finally seems on the right path. The times will not be immediate, but the combination of an expert director, a talented screenwriter and a specific producer could transform a dream chased for almost twenty years in reality.
