The future of the collaboration between Marvel and Insomniac Games seems destined to continue well beyond the release of Marvel’s Wolverine, scheduled for 2026. This was confirmed by Haluk Mentes, general director of Marvel Games, who in a recent interview hinted at how the Californian studio will continue to churn out titles dedicated to the superheroes of the famous comic book universe for many years to come. A solid partnership, born almost by chance and consolidated thanks to the extraordinary success of the series dedicated to Spider-Man.
Insomniac’s metamorphosis from creator of iconic franchises such as Ratchet & Clank and Spyro the Dragon to a point of reference for Marvel video games represents one of the most interesting cases of the modern video game industry.
Since the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018, the studio has demonstrated a unique ability to translate the essence of Marvel characters into the highest quality interactive experiences. The Miles Morales spin-off in 2020 and the full sequel in 2023 further cemented this reputation, leading Insomniac to now face the challenge of bringing Wolverine back after years of absence from consoles.
During an interview with Game Informer, Mentes explained the philosophy that guides Marvel in the selection of partners for its videogame projects.
The executive underlined how the company feels invested with a responsibility towards players and future creatives, considering that for many the first encounter with the Marvel universe could take place through a video game. An approach that goes beyond simple commercial licensing and seeks collaborators willing to fully embrace the values of the brand.
According to Mentes, Marvel’s Wolverine represents the perfect embodiment of this philosophy. The decision to entrust Logan’s videogame return to Insomniac appeared natural to all those involved, according to what the manager declared. The choice was not based solely on the technical skills of the studio, but above all on the sharing of a common culture and values that made the collaboration almost inevitable.
It should be remembered that Insomniac is not the only studio working on Marvel properties: NetEase recently enjoyed huge success with Marvel Rivals, a free-to-play hero shooter style that launched late last year.
However, when it comes to narrative and immersive single-player experiences, the Californian studio seems to have achieved a leading position that is difficult to undermine in the current panorama.
The future of this partnership remains shrouded in mystery regarding specific details. Insomniac has not yet officially revealed which projects will follow the launch of Wolverine, although a breach of the studio’s IT systems in 2023 leaked internal documents that suggested a possible release window for Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 in 2028. That same information also mentioned a standalone Venom game scheduled for 2025, a hypothesis that now seems completely unrealistic considering the limited timeframe remaining.
