After God of War: Ragnarok, many thought that the Kratos saga could finally have reached its natural epilogue (attention to spoilers).
At the end of the game (which you find on Amazon) Atreus’ journey continued on its own, while Kratos, after dealing with pain and guilt, opened to a different future, accepting his new role as the divinity of the Norse war.
The DLC Valhalla sealed that inner path with an almost definitive sense of closure. However, according to the latest rumors, Sony Santa Monica could once again be at work on a new chapter in the series.
The rumors are back to circulate insistently after Jason Schreier from Bloomberg reported that the next project is in full development and represents “the next great thing” for the study.
The speculations on the nature of this game have chased for months: some speak of a return to Greek mythology, others of one Metroidvania focused on Deimos, brother of Kratos seen in Ghost of Sparta.
Still others hypothesize a reboot or a spiritual sequel. However, Schreier wanted to clarify on Resetera that it is not a new IP, even if it might seem such. An enigmatic phrase, but indicative of the fact that the God of War DNA will continue to pulsate also in the next title.
The denial by the journalist regarding old voices on a Sci-Fi project has further restricted the field: Santa Monica is not working on something completely different, but not even a simple “Ragnarok 2” style sequel.
The path taken could therefore be that of a strong evolution of the formula, perhaps with a new gameplay style, an unprecedented structure or even an alternative setting such as Egypt, already mentioned in the 2018 God of War.
For now, Sony Santa Monica remains silent. But if it is true that the new game “is not a new IP” yet “it seems to be”, then we could find ourselves in front of a courageous reinvention, a new era for God of War who, without denying the past, looks forward with ambition.
