18 historic franchises could be up for a remake

The gaming industry faces a multi-billion dollar opportunity that many publishers are still underestimating. According to a new analysis conducted by Ampere Analysis, a company specializing in market research in the gaming sector, there are at least 18 historical franchises that could generate substantial profits if subjected to remakes or remasters.
The data speaks clearly: between 2024 and September 2025, players spent 1.4 billion dollars on remade or remastered titles, with 72.4 million active users on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. A rapidly expanding market that is rewarding complete remakes above all, capable of generating double the revenue compared to traditional remasters.
Katie Holt, senior analyst at Ampere Analysis, presented a detailed list of titles that represent real unexplored gold mines for publishers.
Top candidates for a full remake include the original Assassin’s Creed, Chrono Trigger, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the first Fallout, Rayman Origins, Resident Evil 5, and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. These are games that need a substantial remake to align with modern expectations in terms of gameplay, controls and narrative systems.

On the remaster front, where the technical intervention required is less invasive, Ampere has identified potential candidates in Bloodborne, Bully, Dragon Age Origins, The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Fallout: New Vegas and even Red Dead Redemption 2. Completing the list are some titles that could work with both approaches, such as 2005’s God of War, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, the first Far Cry and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.
Ampere’s analysis focuses particularly on five emblematic case studies. As for the original God of War, released twenty years ago, the company highlights how the franchise maintains an active community with 2.4 million registered monthly users as of September 2025, after reaching a peak of 11.45 million during the launch of Ragnarok in 2022.
Over 20% of players under 45 declare themselves fans of the series, making a modernization intervention attractive. Holt, however, warns: modifying the hack-and-slash combat system and the original narrative too much could alienate historical fans, while a cinematic expansion and updates aimed at the gameplay could significantly broaden the audience.

Bloodborne instead represents the ideal candidate for a remaster rather than a complete remake. Being a PS4 title, player preferences have not changed radically since the last generation, making a total remake of gameplay and narrative unnecessary.
Ampere found that all age groups under 45 show above-average appreciation for the Dark Souls series, while Elden Ring reached 14.4 million active monthly users at its peak. According to the analysis, a faithful remaster that preserves the gothic and disturbing atmosphere of the original could intercept this vast audience of soulslike fans.
The Fallout case deserves special attention, with Ampere clearly distinguishing between the first chapter of 1997 and New Vegas. The original title, a PC exclusive at the time, features control systems, user interface and combat mechanics that many modern players would consider obsolete. The limited dubbing and technical constraints that have affected interactive dialogue systems require a complete remake.
The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 proves that there is still a strong demand for complex, layered Western RPGs. For New Vegas, however, a visual remaster would be enough: the real strength of the game lies in the dialogic choices with multiple consequences, elements that do not require substantial changes. The series reached 16.8 million active monthly users in April 2024, soon after the TV series debuted on Amazon Prime Video, confirming the enormous commercial potential of the franchise.

Regarding The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Ampere highlights how 17% of all players declare themselves fans of the series, with 54% of fans concentrated in the 25-44 age group. A Reddit search for the term \
