Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will also amaze on Switch 2

The debate on the technical performance of triple-A games on hybrid consoles is enriched by a new significant chapter. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 remake series, wanted to publicly reassure Nintendo fans about the quality they can expect from Rebirth on Switch 2. His statements come at a crucial moment, while the first chapter of the trilogy is preparing for the debut on the new hybrid platform of the Kyoto house scheduled for January.
The experience gained by the Square Enix development team in bringing the second installment to different platforms provided valuable lessons. According to what Hamaguchi revealed in a recent interview, the work done to optimize Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC and especially on Steam Deck represented a fundamental test bed. Valve’s portable console has generated reactions of amazement among players for the graphic quality achieved, well above initial expectations considering the hardware limitations of the device.
The director, thanks to his engineering background, explained how the team developed a sophisticated technological system, comparable to Unreal Engine’s Nanite. This solution allows you to dynamically adapt graphic elements in real time, reducing polygons or lowering the resolution based on the available processing power. This flexible architecture, born during PC development, allows it to support different hardware configurations while maintaining high quality standards.

Square Enix’s strategy reveals a methodical approach to technical scalability. The system developed for the PC versions was integrated into the Switch 2 edition, subsequently allowing targeted manual interventions to guarantee a stable frame rate. This hybrid methodology, which combines automation and manual optimization, represents a concrete response to the challenges posed by new generation portable platforms.
Hamaguchi wanted to underline how Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade has already demonstrated notable graphic capabilities on Switch 2, proving competitive compared to the versions for more powerful consoles. This initial success provides credibility to the promises regarding Rebirth, a title originally exclusive for PlayStation 5 and potentially more demanding from a technical point of view due to the characteristics of the Nintendo hybrid platform.
The director has made it his personal mission to ensure excellent performance on all platforms of the remake trilogy. The differences in technical specifications between Steam Deck, Switch 2 and other portable systems do not represent an insurmountable obstacle, in his view. The experience accumulated and the know-how acquired constitute a heritage that the team intends to exploit also for the third chapter still in development.
The positive response received by the PC versions has fueled the developers’ confidence in their ability to adapt. Hamaguchi concluded his statements with a direct message to Nintendo fans, inviting them not to worry. The promise is clear: Rebirth on Switch 2 will offer an experience comparable, if not superior, to that of the first chapter, confirming Square Enix’s commitment to ensuring uniform quality across the different platforms of the Nintendo family.
