The panorama of mods for classic 90s shooters continues to amaze with increasingly elaborate and creative creations. The latest pearl comes from the talented modder WilliamGee, who has transformed the iconic Duke Nukem 3D into a completely new horror experience. It is an ambitious project that overturns the original science fiction atmosphere to immerse itself in a gothic and spooky world, perfect for those seeking nostalgic thrills in a modern key.
Duke Nukem: Horror Castle is much more than just a collection of additional levels. The mod offers a complete adventure that unfolds through nine carefully designed levels, set in several atmospheric Gothic fortresses. The gaming experience lasts approximately 3-5 hours, enough time to explore every corner of these haunted manors and discover all the secrets hidden within their walls.
The bestiary has been completely revamped with the addition of 24 new enemies ranging from classic wandering skeletons to vampire bats to bloodthirsty Nosferatu-like creatures. There are four minibosses derived from the original game, but with an entirely Duke-Nukian peculiarity: the possibility of shrinking them and crushing them underfoot.
Duke’s armory is enriched with four new weapons designed specifically for this horror scenario. Among the most original stands out the ability to launch gigantic spiders at enemies, followed by the devastating Bone Crusher, a weapon that closely resembles the Ravager from Doom: The Dark Ages and which shoots bone splinters at opponents. The health recovery system has been completely rethought: Duke no longer uses traditional medical kits, but can regenerate his energy by smashing abandoned skulls and feeding on their brain contents.
Originally released last May, the mod recently received a major update that further intensifies the Halloween atmosphere. The update introduces new thematic elements such as pumpkins and ghosts, as well as a new secret level populated by exclusive enemies created specifically for the occasion.
WilliamGee’s project fits into a particularly lively moment for the Duke Nukem 3D community. While the chances of seeing an official new chapter in the series remain slim, fans continue to keep the flame alive through increasingly ambitious projects. Just last week, the creator of Voxel Doom announced that he was working on Voxel Duke Nukem 3D, promising an imminent release.
