Nintendo works on new films beyond Super Mario 2 and Zelda

After the great success at the Botteghino di Super Mario Bros. – The film and announcement of the live action film by The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo has confirmed that other cinematographic projects are already on site.
The revelation comes directly from President Shuntaro Furukawa, during the annual shareholders’ meeting of shareholders.
Furukawa has reiterated the company’s commitment to expand access to its main IPs even outside video games, declaring that Nintendo no longer intends to limit themselves to granting licenses but wants to actively participate in production, to ensure creative and qualitative control.
“Rather than simply firing our IP,” he said, “we are adopting a proactive approach, with direct investments and profound involvement in production.”
The new film animated on Super Mario will arrive in theaters in April 2026, followed by The Legend of Zelda in May 2027. However, Furukawa has confirmed that there are other projects being developed, even if it has not revealed titles or output windows.
Speculations focus on IPs such as Kirby, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong and Splatoon (which you also find on Amazon).
The latter, in particular, lends itself to a cinematographic transposition thanks to its world rich in style, the unique mechanics and a lore that goes far beyond the colorful surface.
Kirby and Animal Crossing also have a remarkable potential in terms of universal accessibility and appeal.
Pokémon, on the other hand, remains excluded from this vein of projects: the IP is managed autonomously with an animated compliance sector that Nintendo does not supervise directly.
Nintendo is finally capitalizing on the potential of his IPs as narrative universes, and is doing it with method and ambition.
If Kyoto’s house really focuses on quality rather than quantity, we could witness the birth of a real “Nintendo Cinematic Universe”, but with the sober and well -kept approach that has always distinguished the company.
After decades of questionable adaptations, it is a decidedly welcome change of course. Meanwhile, recover our review of the Super Mario film.
