Zombi review

Nintendo carries on his shoulders for too long now the burden of being accused as a house can give only experiences for young and beardless boys, far from the world of hardcore gamer who for years now graze and fraggano at will on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
The most experienced players know well rather than in more recent history has been able to give the same Wii titles from mature themes and dedicated to a target very different from hardcore shakers controller, with the violent Madworld and deep Monster Hunter to make standard-bearer, without obviously forget RPG high school arrived at the end of the life cycle of the white console as Xenoblade and Pandora’s Tower.
Nintendo Wii U with the air you breathe seems to be very different and the shift in HD, with the subsequent arrival of a number of brands of immense potential, will see the house of Kyoto groped to regain part of the market left on the street during years, he determined to helping us face criticism received by the players and ready to fight Sony and Microsoft on their own field.
While then the big N over the next few months will show what it can do, the task of reaching a different audience in the first instance it is up to the developers involved in the project, the first of Ubisoft, who with Zombi U has decided to join the fray with a survival of times past. The game takes us back in part to the atmosphere gloomy and tense of the first Resident Evil, explored this time in person. Successful experiment?

Welcome to London, hell on earth
Zombi U is completely set in a London which was destroyed by a massive epidemic that decimated the population, leaving few survivors to have to come to terms with thousands of brain eating undead now riversatisi no control on the streets.
Inside a room safety, an unknown and mysterious voice will guide us during our first steps. The story takes shape as broadly without a narrative structure from the solid backbone, leaving the player displaced in a first moment, confused and with an air of bewilderment, so probably unintentional, brings us closer to the star of the new adventure (or rather to the protagonists).
During the first few minutes of game play as in fact a complete stranger, a survivor who will trust blindly any of the voice guidance, only chink in a survival that now seems a distant mirage. Armed with courage and little else, then we will start to take its first steps into a dark world full of dangers, in which death is not a hypothesis so remote. The atmosphere is one of those tough: blind spots, sudden noises that pierce the silence that surrounds us and the constant feeling of being hunted down by an invisible enemy that could be hiding anywhere really. This atmosphere leads the player to be fascinated and defer the lack of a solid thread to the events. It will also follow him, almost as if he had alternatives, the ubiquitous voice, that can give a false sense of security and control over different parts of London, with the ability to observe any movement through the dozens of security cameras scattered everywhere .
Although the levels attempt to present the game world as a city girovagabile in freedom, in fact, except for rare cases, the road ahead will always fairly linear and the need to start from a given point to achieve the goal marked on game map will follow us throughout the adventure, limiting the pure exploration to a few hidden rooms and rare secondary routes.
The fact that the protagonist is not able to jump amplifies the feeling of general static, loaded also by the inability to interact with any object of the scenario, whether simple chairs or monitor, and attenuated only in part by the ability to climb over some crates , crawl under or climb over fences certain low fences, all obviously with pre-calculated movements.

I have a bat and I’m not afraid to use it!
To fight the hordes of undead our alter ego may use various firearms, including pistols, rifles but also turrets and fixed locations of those who once were the last defensive bulwarks of the British Army. No fear though, the imprint of Zombi U is absolutely devoted to action and in fact reduced the number of munitions that will take you around to avoid firing wildly. Although to take out a zombie normal a well-placed shot could be sufficient, able to hit in the middle of the head of an enemy staggering not just easy and unless you arrive at your bite your charger will spit much more lead than necessary before to shoot down the enemies, forcing you to choose carefully how to eliminate them. However, if the weapons are your thing you will find scattered around the map are also a number of enhancements applicable to guns on the special work tables, which, in a way similar to what we saw in Dead Rising, will increase the flow rate, the rate of fire, the power and the number of rounds in the magazine. A feature that gives the marginal gameplay really little more. By killing enemies burst with a particular weapon, also, your character will become more proficient in its use, obviously improving the effectiveness and making it even more deadly. This experience will be lost in the event of death, however, making it essential groped to survive as long as possible with the same protagonist.
Once the ammunition but will not be a simple meal with his legs but can rely sull’inglesissima cricket bat supplied weapons for melee devastating if used intelligently. Unfortunately, the combat system is one of the weaknesses of the production and take the pressure of the back pad to load the shot and release it on the heads of enemies. The response to the impact of walking corpses is highly disappointing and most of the time that they centrerete these stagger backwards, allowing you to launch other shots in rapid succession until their death. Who cares if advancing in levels meet zombie swat armor, royal guards or policemen, you will break down your bat tirelessly with the same simple routine.
The only real concern will then only when you are surrounded by three or more zombies, because if even one of these were to get to brancarvi, the inscription game over troneggerà screen.

Reborn in the body of a woman and not known differences …
After death you will be taken directly to the starting point, but in the role of a protagonist completely new and stripped of all equipment collected until then. Again hopeless, unmotivated but always with your cricket bat you’ll have to trust you off to the point of your kill and retrieve your backpack close avidly in the hands of the hero earlier, now became a zombie. To get there we can exploit the various checkpoin for quick trips unlocked during the previous run and presented here in the form of subway tunnels, activated by tapping on our paddone the manhole its once discovered.
The basic idea is great and no one ever before had thought of throwing in a videogame infinite random characters, each ready to become a hero and survive the pandemic or perish in the attempt to do so. A pity then that the whole thing then is reduced strictly to a mere cosmetic change of the protagonist, as the NPC does not seem to care about our changing treating us as if nothing had changed. We would have preferred to do so from a completely different area, with different reactions based on different personalities and generally give more care to the emotions conveyed by the characters, really anonymous. In this way the atmosphere goes to clash terribly with a history flat, approfondibile through newspaper clippings and documents recovered during exploration but absolutely not very effective. From this point of view it could and should do much more.

A paddone in his hands
Zombi U gameplay itself has summed up in a few simple lines: turn to a devastated city, collect any relevant information to survive and be able to take home Pellacchia. To put flesh on the fire this time we think the pad which, unlike what we have seen in other titles for the Wii U, not only is implemented with logical sense but it is essential for carrying out certain tasks.
During normal play on the controller screen will display a map of the game, with the aim to reach always marked clearly, and we will be given the opportunity to start a sonar pulse to detect threats before they enter the our field of vision. In addition, you can assign up to six buttons tactile care, weapons or items for quick use of the same, practical and functional.
Pressing the left bumper will then paddone the mode display and, with the movements of the same or the simple use of analog, you can scan the various rooms and analyze the distance objects and containers to assess whether or not worth exploring dark areas in an attempt to recover some valuable resource.
A good use of the device, therefore, that this time is not used as mere tinsel but assumes an important role in the production. The only flaw is the continuous movement of the eyes from the TV to the pad after a few hours of play bored and distracted, ruining some of the pressure.

U Bad, Bad Mii, Bad Wii
Zombi U suffers from serious technical flaws, too deep to be ignored in the final evaluation. The polygonal models of zombies, as well as those of the characters are really poor and little need for the gradual crushing of the skull before our shots to them to us to appreciate more. Cared little animations and interpolations on the agenda weigh heavily on the graphics that, for a console that should be the best on the market, can not satisfy the most demanding player.
A demonstration of how little attention has been put in the development of the finishing of the title you just think that many of the textures of the doors have been reported with a simple copy and paste to front and back, but forgetting to mirror all the writings which are thus unreadable. Good games of light and shadow with a sound at the top and atmosphere, especially during the gloomy nights of rain lit only by our torch shaky, that manages to kidnap and to immerse the player in the adventure, however, forced to wake up abruptly before the lack of a title just finished.

The Good

  • Great atmosphere
  • Punitive
  • Good basic ideas
  • Reasoned use of the pad

The Bad

  • Various technical issues
  • Too simplistic combat system
  • Poor plot
