Rise of the Tomb Raider Review

There is a feeling (maybe wrong) that Rise of the Tomb Raider has not collected than he deserved in terms of sales and “word of mouth” on the web, while remaining a gentleman action-adventure as we have reported in our review for the Xbox One, to which we refer you to really know everything about the game. Yeah, because Square Enix brings out the game on PC only today, or two and a half months after the release on the two Microsoft and also this distribution chopping console, which will conclude shortly with the version for PlayStation 4, it affected the sales speech we mentioned before. A little bad. Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC is the same game seen on Xbox One only more beautiful to look at and, fortunately, with optimization and stability on day one that proved to be better than expected. After downloading the code review from Steam dedicated to the press (the game will be available for everyone from tomorrow to 49,99 €), it was enough just to understand how Crystal Dynamics has worked well in this version.

You’re just a GTX 960?
Our PC is equipped with a GeForce GTX 960 (version with 4 GB of VRAM), an Intel Core i7 930 processor, 12 GB of RAM and Samsung SSD 850 EVO 256GB. We tested the game in Windows 10 64-bit environment with Nvidia 361.43 drivers, but on Thursday will be released most likely view the new driver also the proximity of the game to Nvidia both in terms of technologies implemented, and for the presence of free game for a period of limited time when you buy a new GTX 970. the graphics options are numerous and if you want to play in 50-60 fps Full HD with a configuration similar to our own, you’ll have to get down to some compromise. After all, the same Nvidia recommends a GTX 970 to enjoy the game in all its glory, but already with a 960 (or AMD equivalent) be able to take away a lot of satisfaction. The factor to be taken into account is the most anti-aliasing. With FXAA you can keep almost all the other parameters of Very High and traveling around 40-45 fps in the outer and 55-60 fps in the interior, although in some of the graves with very large and detailed environments (especially if there of ‘half water) frame-rate tends to look a lot like the ones you have in outwards.

All about anti-aliasing
If you opt for the SSAA 2x, you should get off at High while SSAA with 4x or keeps it all to Medium, with visual results not really exhilarating, or becomes very difficult to rise above 20 fps. It must be said that the qualitative leap is greater going from FXAA in SSAA 2x 4x SSAA not by him on and in the end we chose the second option, ie 2x SSAA and general level to High. If you wish to earn more 3-4 fps, you should not set the Pure Hair option to Very High; it is true that the hair of Lara with this push to the maximum technique are really beautiful for realism and “volume” and that, compared to the previous chapter in the increasingly standard on PCs, weigh less in terms of performance, but you can live well without. If you want maxare all complete with 4x SSAA, a GTX 970 starts to become mandatory, because the quality of the textures, the dynamism of the foliage and the HBAO + as ambient occlusion method are felt not a little. In our case we enjoyed a still beautiful graphics framework, traveling almost always between 45 and 55 fps apart from the opening words of the mountains with the snow storm, where we have never climbed above 40 fps perhaps to effect home snow.

PC vs Xbox One
For the rest Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC is something else than what we saw on Xbox One with its still spectacular 1080p at 30 fps. Detail higher, embodied very detailed (the face of Lara in the first cut-scenes is really impressive), more careful lighting, and more realistic surfaces, especially as regards the icy walls, rocks and the trunks of the trees. The input lag that occurred on Xbox One during the gunfights disappeared and for the rest, including a wildlife reproduced to perfection (the giant bears are impressive), reflexes and volumetric effects, is really a pretty sight, and from that little we have experimented with 4x SSAA playing just a few minutes at 15-20 fps, the graphical framework, a greater compactness, especially if you come from FXAA. In short, a lot of work and a remarkable stability considering the absence of stuttering and bug worth noting. Then the game is graphically “challenging” is certainly an unexpected thing, but it is not the right way and without requiring other hardware configurations world to be played as it should be in full HD.

The Good

  • Great graphic
  • Stable and optimized code
  • Graphically improved compared to the Xbox version

The Bad

  • Some gameplay limits as in the Xbox version
