Need for Speed Review

It is undeniable that Need for Speed we both enjoyed it so much that when it was released on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 we rewarded with a nice 8 full, recognizing Ghost Games especially the excellent technical sector, a guidance system rather flexible and the return in the tuning range, though not developed as we would have liked. In any case, a great game that very soon also will land on PC after a wait of more than five months. For the occasion, while detailed information, consult our review starting console November if you want to discover the whole of the game, we wanted to test our new PC with Intel Core i7 4790k processor pushed to 4.2 GHz, 16 GB of DDR3 RAM, GeForce Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming Edition (frequencies a bit ‘more extreme than the reference models), and the Samsung SSD 256 GB. The game, downloaded from Origin, has been tested on Windows 10 and with the latest Nvidia drivers available at the time of writing, ie 364.51 following the problematic 364.47 a few days ago.

Whiz in Full HD at 60 fps
A mid-level PC that does not promise miracles than Full HD, but our goal, having among other things a monitor 16:10 1920×1200 pixels, it was precisely to reach 60 fps fixed Full HD 30 fps compared to the console versions. We must admit that the result was achieved without major problems and the feeling is that even with a GTX 960 Full HD at over 30 fps is easily accessible, provided you make some sacrifices in the graphics options level. In this regard we held enabled the Motion Blur, setting of Ultra also the quality of textures, shadows, of the details and effects. As ambient occlusion we opted for HBAO, while antialiasing we tried immediately with the TAA option in place of the lighter and less powerful FXAA. Blocking all with the 60 fps V-Sync, the game has never fallen below this threshold except for brief passages to 59 fps and the VRAM occupied has remained between 2.9 and 3.2 GB; so if you have a graphics card with 2 GB of VRAM, you will have to make some sacrifices and certainly not be able to keep everything on Ultra (texture mostly) as in our case. Without V-Sync (and with a lot ‘of tearing) we also looked at 65-67 fps, and if we look at the situation on day one (the game will be released on PC in three days), Ghost Games has done a really good I work both at level of optimization, both as a cleaning of the code. Even a crash in more than ten hours of gameplay, glitches did not receive and a general feeling of solidity to it all. On the other hand already on the game console worked beautifully, with a slight preference on PlayStation 4 as compared to 900p at 1080p Xbox One, although the level of fluency both consoles have managed to maintain 30 fps mostly stable.

To each his own steering wheel
On the PC, however, the doubling of the ground frame is very good for the game and the feeling is that in a title like this 30 fps begin to go tight. Need for Speed among other things, is the second racing game made with Frostibte 3 after Need for Speed: Rivals of 2013, even if we imagine that in the last two years, the graphics engine weblog DICE is still went into some upgrading. The result in graphic terms, with our PC and with all shot at best, then remains impressive among the reflections on the wet, the smoke particle effects and sparks, the dynamic lighting, physical impacts and even a strong destructibility city environment. The qualitative leap compared to the console is especially noticeable in the texture (even more if you set the level of Ultra) and a graphic framework slightly sharper and a little ‘less “grainy” and soft, without removing anything anyway (and we repeat) as seen on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. to note also that the version of Need for Speed PC already contains everything published so far on to the Live Update free level console. We refer in particular to updates Icons and Legends, with subsequent Showcase and Hot Rods set a few days after the launch of 17 March. Finally, those who purchase the faint of PC can count on the compatibility with different flying simulation models including Logitech G27, Logitech G29, Thrustmaster TX, Thrustmaster T500 and Fanatec CSR, as well as to use exclusively the temporary manual transmission system.

The Good

  • Outstanding graphic
  • well optimized game since day one
  • Many content and some exclusive for PC
  • 60 fps make the difference

The Bad

  • Some more graphics options would have not hurt
